How much is that old air conditioner actually costing you?

With the worst of the hot weather behind us for the year, now is an excellent time to give some thought to how much running your old air conditioning is actually costing you and perhaps consider your options for next summer?

We’ve come a long way from the big old air conditioning units of the past, and it’s fair to say that the planet and our hip-pockets are feeling better because of it.

Modern air conditioning split systems look very different from those of the past. They are more streamlined, quieter and, thankfully, more efficient. But it’s what you can’t see that makes the most difference.

Air conditioning systems still use Freon as the heat transfer agent – that’s the gas that changes from a gas to a liquid as it flows through the piping between the condenser (external) and evaporator (internal) parts of your system.

Other than that, there have been massive changes. Today’s electrical motors deliver gains in efficiency, noise reduction, and effectiveness that were unimaginable, even a few years ago.

Like many industries today, technology has made its mark in the air conditioner manufacturing industry too. There have been innovations, new design thinking, optimised precision manufacturing, better designed and efficient motors and compressors. These improvements combined have reduced the running costs of the average split system air conditioner significantly, in some cases as much as 30 per cent depending upon make and model.
